Amtrak needs your help for final push in Senate!

To NARP Members--June 12, 2002:

Three senators have signed since yesterday's message: Conrad ND, Edwards
NC and Levin MI. The 48 senators who have signed (see list below)
include 12 members of the Appropriations Committee, a fact you might
point out if your senator's office cites membership on that committee
as a reason for failing to sign.

Neither Indiana senator has signed, and only one each from Arkansas,
California and Florida. Others not on the list who have been supportive
in the past include Harkin (D-IA), Burns (R-MT), Carnahan (D-MO),
Daschle (D-SD) and Hutchison (R-TX).

Your message should indicate that a senator who wants to sign the letter
should contact John Kilvington in Senator Carper's office, 4-3260.

To repeat yesterday's message: The Capitol Hill switchboard is
202/224-3121; the Senate directory is at
http://www.senate.gov/contacting/index.cfm.
The Senate directory has e-mail addresses and web sites (where, in many
cases, fax numbers will be listed). Please include your full, regular
address whatever means of communication you use.

Here is the current list.

--Ross B. Capon, NARP Executive Director

TRAC Members & Associates--

I just got off the phone with Ross Capon of NARP. He said Senator
Feinstein signed the Pro-Amtrak Letter to Senate Appropriators today
after a "flood" of emails and phone calls since yesterday! Ross
thanks TRAC for our efforts and he said our campaign was paramount in
getting Feinstein to sign the letter. NARP has now exceeded its goal
of majority-plus-one signing in the Senate--with 52 Senators signing!

This shows what we can do as an organization, as a group of
individuals with common goals. In the last 24 hours I have received
over 70 cc's of member and associate emails to Feinstein, and this
doesn't include the phone calls and letters. I have read a number of
these emails and will read them all by this evening. They are
excellent--short, stating the main points and yet all individualized.
And most importantly, so many of you took the time to send an email
and be part of the effort.

I also sent Feinstein email on behalf of TRAC, letting her know of
our membership numbers and of the wide distribution of the California
Rail News. She was reminded that many thousands of rail passengers
throughout California would soon be reading about her
decision--whatever it was--regarding the signing of this letter.
Membership numbers and publication distribution equals political
influence.

This is only one battle in the fight for a better Amtrak, many more
lay ahead. But today we helped our friends at NARP with their
national goal which in turn supports our state goals (which includes
interstate, long-distance services). We also let Feinstein know we
are out there and that we care how she votes on rail passenger issues.

If anyone receives replies by email or mail from Senator Feinstein
(or has received any in the past, to asses her past position), I
would appreciate receiving a copy here at TRAC (926 J St. #612,
Sacramento 95814).

I thank you all,

--
