Subject:	Roth/Biden Pro-Amtrak Press Release

Dear Friends of Amtrak:

What follows is a press release from Senators Roth and
Biden of Delaware. Call or write your U.S. Senators and
urge them to get onboard! The toll free number to Capitol
Hill is: 1-800-962-3524.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 4, 1997

ROTH AND BIDEN FORM COALITION OF AMTRAK SUPPORTERS

"If Amtrak is to remain viable, it needs adequate operational
funding and a secure source of capital funding," Roth said. "The
coalition will allow us to join forces with other like-minded
Senators as we work to build a more modern and efficient Amtrak
prepared to meet the transportation challenges of the next
century."

"Making sure that Amtrak receives adequate resources,
particularly a dedicated source of funding, has long been one of
my top priorities," Biden said. "This coalition will help us to
mobilize the support for Amtrak and passenger rail service which
is essential to Delaware and an important part of America's
transportation system."

In a letter to other Senators, the coalition wrote, "Passenger
rail service is a vital component of our nation's surface
transportation system. Due to increasing highway congestion and
air quality requirements in urban areas, and the need for more
transportation options in rural areas, reliance on passenger rail
service will increase. Given these facts, the question we believe
is not whether the nation needs to support rail passenger service
but how."

"We are forming a bipartisan intercity passenger rail coalition
to address this question. This will be a group that can be
counted on to speak up for passenger rail, especially during the
appropriations and authorization process."
