The 2018 California Passenger Rail Summit was held on Wednesday and Thursday, April 18 & 19, 2018. Prior to the event on Tuesday evening, April 17, 2018, a small reception was held for the event staff and a few key attendees on board the Patrick Henry Private Railcars. At the close of the event on Thursday evening, April 19, 2018, another small reception was held aboard these private railcars.
The two Patrick Henry Private Railcars were on display on Track 15 at the 2018 California Passenger Rail Summit for attendees to walk through and tour. At the conclusion of the event the private railcars were attached to the tail end of the Amtrak Southwest Chief that would be departing eastbound from Los Angeles Union Station at 6:10pm that evening.
Those invited to attend the post event reception on board the Patrick Henry Private Railcars had planned to enjoy dinner as they rode on the cars either to the Fullerton or San Bernardino Amtrak Stations. Due to a refrigeration problem on the Cafe / Lounge Car of the Amtrak Southwest Chief, the departure from Los Angeles was delayed about two hours while Amtrak switched out that car. Because of this delay most of the guests got off the private cars after dinner in Los Angeles Union Station without having a chance to ride the cars.
A few of us that remained on board would ride these private railcars either to Riverside, California, or Albuquerque, New Mexico. My wife and I would be one of the 3 couples that would ride the Patrick Henry Private Railcars all the way to Albuquerque and then ride the Amtrak Southwest Chief back to Los Angeles from there.
