The photos are from a pre-tour we took of the Los Angeles Metro Regional Connecor Transit Project. We were checking what locations would be feasible to take attendees during a rail event scheduled for Spring 2018.

Little Tokyo/Arts District Station - 1st St/Central Av (Below)

The above photos are of construction of the station and rail tunnels. From the surface we could look around and see the buildings of Little Tokyo. The conveyor belt in the right photo above is bringing crushed rock out of the tunnel produced by the tunnel boring machine.

Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill Station - 2nd Pl/Hope St (below)

Above on the left you can see two round circles at the bottom of the dig. The left circle is where the rail tunnel comes into the station. It has alreayd been completed all the way to the Tokyo Station many blocks away. The right circle is where the digging is still underway. The digging machine will be breaking through into this station soon. Above on the right are pipes that help to keep the shaft walls apart.

Above on the right you can see some tiny organe dots. These are the consturction workers wearing their orange safety vests. They look so tiny as this dig and station is more than 100 feet below the surface! Click on the photo above for a larger image and then click again for a full screen image.

Above are more photos of the construction of the Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill Station - 2nd Pl/Hope St.

Above are photos of the I-Beams at the surface of the dig. You can see some of the nearby buildings in the left photo.

Above left: Work vehicles at the construction site. Above right: Emergency evacuation crane. There is a main construction elevator that goes down to the bottom of the work site. This serves as a secondary and emergency mechinism for workers to exit from the construction site.

Above left: The Disney Concert Hall can be seen in the background behind the construction work site. Above right: A poster of the Angeli Tunnel Boring Machine that is digging the new Los Angeles Metro subway tunnels.

When this project is completed there will be a re-configuratin of the Los Angeles Metro Subway Lines. The BLUE LINE will run all the way from Azusa (currently on the GOLD LINE) to Long Beach (already on the BLUE LINE). Thus you will be able to take the light rail BLUE LINE between Azusa and Long Beach without changing trains. The GOLD LINE will run all the way from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Thus passengers will be able to travel between all the stations on this new GOLD LINE configuration without a change of trains. Many other travel patterns in the Los Angeles area will become more direct, simplified and require less changing of trains once this LA METRO Regional Connector Project is completed.

Overview quoted from the Metro website on October 26, 2017:

The Metro Regional Connector Project extends from the Metro Gold Line Little Tokyo/Arts District Station to the 7th Street/Metro Center Station in downtown Los Angeles, allowing passengers to transfer to Blue, Expo, Red and Purple Lines, bypassing Union Station. The 1.9-mile alignment will serve Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Civic Center, The Historic Core, Broadway, Grand Av, Bunker Hill, Flower St and the Financial District.

This new Metro Rail extension will also provide a one-seat ride for travel across Los Angeles County. From the Metro Gold Line, passengers will be able to travel from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica without transferring lines.

The Regional Connector will improve access to both local and regional destinations by providing continuous thru service between these lines and providing connectors to other rail lines via the 7th St/Metro Center Station.

The new Metro Rail extension will offer an alternative transportation option to congested roadways and provide significant environmental benefits, economic development, and employment opportunities throughout Los Angeles County.

The Regional Connector Project receives partial funding from Measure R, which is a half-cent sales tax increase approved by voters in 2008.
