TrainWeb May Be Off-line
Midnight To About 3 AM Pacific Time
www.trainweb.com/news/1999c19a.html

We plan to take the TrainWeb server off-line at about midnight this evening, Pacific Time, for no more than about 3 hours. In addition to www.trainweb.com being unavailable while the server is off-line, all other websites hosted on the TrainWeb server will be unavailable during this time.

Our access statistics show that the server has the least amount of visitors between midnight and 3 A.M. Pacific Time (3 A.M. and 6 A.M. Eastern Time). Thus, we are attempting to perform system work during the time that will cause the least problem for our visitors. However, there is some possibility that the server may need to be taken down for a short time during normal business hours one day this week. Unfortunately, technical support from our equipment vendors is not open at midnight.

One of the items that we are doing during this off-line service time is to significantly upgrade the amount of disk space on our server. We expect the current disk expansion will be able to handle the needs of TrainWeb and its clients for the next year or two.

The server may be off-line for one or more evenings between midnight and 3 A.M. this week until all servicing is completed. Once the upgrades are completed, we expect to be back to our normal 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, available access. TrainWeb appreciates your patience in this matter.

Personally, I will be on an Amtrak rail journey this week. If all goes well, I will have traveled on all of the rail miles served by Amtrak by the time I return from this journey on March 29, 1999. Although I am usually able to handle my e-mail and update the TrainWeb site when I stay in hotels during my rail journeys, I won't be able to do that as often as usual during this particular journey. I will often be arriving at hotels after 10 P.M. and departing about 5 A.M. I will try and access the system as often as I can, but that might turn out to be less often than I would like. Thus, expect to see TrainWeb updated less often than usual this week and expect delays in receiving replies to e-mail from me. Thanks again, in advance, for your understanding!
