Talgo Farewell: Amtrak Cascades Trainsets Bound for Scrapper (March 1, 2021) -- By Randall Pratt: SEATTLE - Amtrak and Washington State DOT have reached an agreement with Coast Rail Services of Anaheim, Calif., to dispose of the remaining Talgo Series 6 trainsets that have been stored at Seattle's King Street Station after being deemed unsafe by the National Transportation Safety Board following a fatal 2017 wreck. The cars were used on Amtrak's Cascades service between Vancouver and Eugene, Ore., for more than two decades and the power cars featured a unique tail fin. -- from Railfan & Railroad Magazine. TrainWeb Staff Reporters were closely involved with the Talgo trainsets right from their original introduction on Amtrak routes. Hence why there are links to so many stories and photos related to the Talgo below. They first started running on the Amtrak Mount Adams route before the service was renamed to the Amtrak Cascades, and then did one demonstration run on a proposed new Amtrak route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. A special Talgo was built with decor to complement that proposed Las Vegas route. But after that route was scrapped, the train was added to the Amtrak Cascades route and the paint scheme and decor modified to match the other Amtrak Cascades trainset.

As mentioned above, all the Talgo trainsets were deemed unsafe for operation on Amtrak routes due to the mix of passenger and heavy freight trains on these same tracks. The Talgo trainsets were originally given a waiver by the FRA to operate on these tracks which may have proven to be a mistake. Talgo trainsets mostly operate in Europe where most routes are dedicated to passenger trains that do not share tracks with heavy freight trains.
