1) THE most immediate action you can take is to contact the following
Senators and ask them to vote in favor of the Lautenberg amendment that would
restore $61 million to the Amtrak budget for mandatory payments. The Senate
Appropriations Committee will take up the measure on Tuesday, July 22.

This is a list of the Senators who you should contact:

Herb Kohl (D-WI) senator_kohl@kohl.senate.gov
Phone: (202) 224-5653 Fax: (202) 224-9787

Harry Reid (D-NV) senator_reid@reid.senate.gov
Phone: (202) 224-3542 Fax: (202) 224-7327

Robert Byrd (D-WV) senator_byrd@byrd.senate.gov
Phone: (202) 224-3954 Fax: (202) 228-0002

Conrad Burns (R-MT) conrad_burns@burns.senate.gov
Phone: (202) 224-2644 Fax: (202) 224-8594

Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO) Phone: (202) 224-5852
Fax: (202) 224-1933

The E-mail addresses above are from the Senators own websites.

2) There have been many problems with the House E-mail addresses that have
been provided on the internet and through Congress itself as well as through
other sources on the internet.

In some cases a representative's own website provides an e-mail address that
returns the mail.

The procedure for getting House e-mail addresses from the House web site has
changed -- now you are expected to go through the web site
, where you type in your zip code and then
you can either send a message or go to your representative's web site.

The Senate e-mail addresses are still available at:

http://www.senate.gov/senator/membmail.html

3) In addition the toll-free number to Capitol Hill that I sent was recently
disconnected. I am told that a new toll-free number to the Capitol Hill
Switchboard is: 888-723-5246

4) The Lautenberg amendment would restore the full $61 million in excess
mandatory payments, bringing the Senate's operating number up to the level
requested by President Clinton (and thus $61 million above the House level).
To pass this amendment requires all the Democrats and plus three
Republicans, but the following Democrats may have a special need to hear from
constituents: Kohl (WI), Reid (NV) and Byrd (WV). On the Republican side,
Specter (PA) and Hutchison (TX) are likely supporters; Burns (MT) and
Campbell (CO) may also be possible, both voted for the Roth Amtrak provision
on June 27; but don't give up on anyone! Thanks.
